Fun fact: You are only 1% human.

Don’t panic, this is perfectly normal. What I mean is 1% human by DNA composition. If you read all of the genetic material within your body, which includes all of the different cells and organisms that live in you, you get your metagenome. Yet only 1% of it would be human genes — the rest, are the genes of the trillions of microbes in your body.

That’s right, Trillions. It’s pretty scary to realize that within us, our human genes are outnumbered by bacterial genes. What’s scarier is the fact that we have more bacterial cells than human cells, at a near 1:1 ratio. Yet we don’t look like a blob of bacteria and feel completely fine. Humans look human because bacterial cells are much smaller than human cells.

But wait… aren’t bacteria harmful to us?

Few bacteria are actually harmful to us, most bacteria are completely harmless to us, and many we rely on to survive. This doesn’t mean you should eat the mysterious “chocolate” you find at the dogpark and not wash your hands with soap after a heavy unload.
